Houston, Texas – CareAllies, a Cigna company, has named Joseph (Joe) M. Nicholson, III, D.O., chief medical officer.

In this role, Dr. Nicholson will lead clinical operations, including medical and behavioral management, case management, and disease management. He will provide strategic direction, operational oversight, and thought leadership for all clinical programs at CareAllies.

With more than 25 years of experience from both the payer and provider perspectives, his deep expertise will directly benefit CareAllies customers and the patients they serve.

Dr. Nicholson joins CareAllies from Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), where he served as the corporate senior vice president and national medical director of contracting and business development, focusing on contract negotiation, program development, innovation and value-based reimbursement design. He previously served as vice president of health care management and chief medical officer for Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) of Oklahoma, a subsidiary of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC).

He earned his medical degree at Oklahoma State University – College of Osteopathic Medicine. While serving in the U.S. Army, he completed his internship at what was then Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Colorado, and later served as Chief of Emergency Medicine at Fort Leonard Wood. After leaving the U.S. Army, Dr. Nicholson completed his residency in family medicine at Oklahoma University College of Medicine – Tulsa. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
